Moncton High School Auditorium, 360° View

This auditorium was for many years one of the few places available in Moncton for hosting large entertainment or community-oriented events. Many residents will remember coming here to see local, regional, national and even international-level artists. Moncton High School itself has a well developed theatre program; over the years, many MHS students have taken part in stage productions in this auditorium.

Moncton High School (MHS) is a heritage property in Moncton, New Brunswick. It was built in 1934 and started operating as a school in 1935. The building is an example of Normandy Gothic Revival style architecture. The school's mission statement is: “Instill in each person a belief in the potential to seek wider horizons”. The school colours are purple and white, and the mascot is the “Purple Knight”. Today, approximately 1200 students attend class here. However, these student may be among the last to call MHS their school.

In 2007, a commissioned report (made public in 2009) recommended that the building be renovated and continue to be used as a school. The cost of renovating the building was estimated at approximately $48 million; however, it was also estimated that a new school would cost around $25 million! The provincial then decided to build a new school on the outskirts of the city, near the Royal Oaks Estates and Golf Course. Since this decision was made public, a growing number of people are asking the provincial government to reconsider its decision to build a new school outside the city core instead of renovating the existing building. In 2014 a new school is scheduled to open and will replace the "old" Moncton High School. Apparently, the new school will bear the same name.
